Algebra Connections Glossary
table
The tables used in this course represent numerical information by organizing it into columns and rows.  The numbers may come from a graph, situation (pattern), or rule (equation).  Many of the tables in this course are x-y tables like the one shown below.

term
A term is a single number,  variable, or the product of numbers and variables.  In an expression, terms are separated by addition or subtraction signs.  For example, in the expression 1.2x − 45 + 3xy², the terms are 1.2x, − 45, and 3xy².
tile pattern
  See “pattern.”
Transitive Property of Equality
  The Transitive Property of Equality states that if a = b and b = c, then a = c.  For example, if x = 2y and 2y = 13, then x must equal 13.
trend line
A line that represents a set of data.  The trend line does not necessarily intersect each data point; it attempts to approximate the data, as in the example below. Trend lines are often used to make predictions about future, unobserved data points. pic
trinomial
A polynomial that is the sum or difference of exactly three terms, each of which is a monomial.  For example, x² + 6x + 9 is a trinomial.
twice
Two times as much.  For example, a twenty-dollar bill has twice the value of a ten-dollar bill.
