horizontal lines |
|
---|---|
Horizontal lines are “flat” and run left to right in the same direction as the x-axis. Horizontal lines have equations of the form y = b, where b can be any number. For example, the graph at right shows the horizontal line y = 3. The slope of any horizontal line is 0. The x-axis has the equation y = 0 because y = 0 everywhere on the x‑axis.

hypothesis |
|
(1) A term scientists use to mean an “educated guess” (or what mathematicians call a conjecture), based on data, patterns, and relationships. For instance, having looked at many multiples of five, you might form a hypothesis that every multiple of five ends in the digit 0 or the digit 5. (2) In an “If...then...” statement, the “if” portion is called the hypothesis. For example, in the statement “If x = 3, then x² = 9,” the hypothesis is “x = 3.” (Also see “conclusion.”) |
